Casino Bonuses and Wagering, Explained

The headline percentage is the least informative number in the offer. Four other terms decide what it is actually worth.

What a wagering requirement is

A wagering requirement is the total you must stake before bonus winnings can be withdrawn. It is written as a multiple, so 35x on a hundred dollar bonus means staking three and a half thousand dollars in total.

The first thing to check is what the multiple applies to. Thirty-five times the bonus and thirty-five times deposit plus bonus are the same advertised number and twice the obligation.

Game weighting is where offers are really won or lost

Not every dollar staked counts the same. Slots usually count fully, while table games often count ten per cent or less, and some games are excluded outright.

So a hundred dollars staked on blackjack may reduce the requirement by ten. If you mostly play table games, an offer built for slots can be effectively impossible to clear, whatever the headline says.

The two limits people find out about last

  • Maximum conversion. Many offers cap what bonus winnings can become, regardless of what you actually won. Clearing the wagering and then finding the payout capped is the most common complaint about bonuses anywhere.
  • Maximum bet while wagering. Exceeding it, often accidentally, can void the bonus and everything won with it. It is usually a small number and it is usually buried.

Free spins are rarely as free as they read

Free spins normally produce bonus funds rather than cash, and those funds carry their own wagering requirement. The spin value is also often lower than your normal stake, so two hundred spins at twenty cents is forty dollars of play, not two hundred spins of the kind you would otherwise be making.

The option nobody advertises

You can decline the bonus. Playing with your own money means no wagering requirement, no maximum bet rule, no time limit and no cap on what you can withdraw, and you can cash out whenever you like.

For a lot of players that is worth more than the offer, and it is worth doing the comparison honestly rather than assuming a bonus is free money with paperwork attached.

Frequently asked questions

What does 35x wagering mean?
You must stake 35 times the bonus before bonus winnings can be withdrawn. Check whether the multiple applies to the bonus alone or to deposit plus bonus — the second is twice the obligation for the same advertised number.
Why is my table game play barely reducing the wagering requirement?
Game weighting. Slots usually count fully while table games often count ten per cent or less, so a hundred dollars staked on blackjack may only reduce the requirement by ten.
What is maximum conversion?
A cap on what bonus winnings can become, regardless of what you actually won. Clearing the wagering and then finding the payout capped is the most common bonus complaint there is, and the cap is stated in the terms rather than the advert.
Can a bonus be voided by betting too much?
Yes. Most offers set a maximum bet while wagering is outstanding, and exceeding it — often by accident — can void the bonus and everything won with it. The limit is usually small and usually buried.
Are free spins actually free?
They usually produce bonus funds rather than cash, and those funds carry their own wagering requirement. The spin value is often lower than your normal stake, so the real value is smaller than the headline number suggests.
Is it better to decline the bonus?
Often, yes. Playing with your own money means no wagering requirement, no maximum bet rule, no time limit and no cap on what you can convert, and you can withdraw whenever you want.
